"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can
change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead
Greetings AOM Members and Colleagues: The heat of the sun continues to invigorate the life of the AOM profession. . .The tally of letters sent to us and forwarded to our lobbyist in Washington asserting the rightful place of AOM in national healthcare reform has grown as the profession comes together. Over 21,000 letters have been written to policy-makers! This number testifies to a growing consensus about the importance of HR 646. Again, thank you for lending your voice so actively to the AOM profession. More and more these are signs that everyone is working together for the betterment of the AOM profession. Recently we received a newsletter from ASNY, (The Acupuncture Society of New York) They included a link for their members to join the AAAOM and mentioned what the AAAOM is doing these days for the profession. We feel very grateful for the solidarity and collaborative spirit these actions demonstrate. In this month’s National AOM Issues section, read about Mayway’s matching campaign for AOMPAF donations. From July 1st through Sept 30th, 2009, Mayway will match donations made through Mayway to the AAAOM Political Action Fund up to $5,000 dollars (for a combined total of $10,000 or more). This program is yet another symbol of how various AOM stake-holders are coming together to work toward our common goals. Please use this great offer to enlarge your AOMPAF donation if you can! The AAAOM Media Education Committee worked together to issue a strong statement supporting AOM against an article which misrepresented the medicine. We publish this response to show just how far we have come in our comprehensive ability to represent the evidence for AOM so thoroughly. Redeploying this message in the right context is part of the long-term strategy to engage—politely but firmly—whenever the chance for clarification arises. Integrative medicine continues to move forward in tangible ways. John Chen received a lecture invitation from UCSF. Former American Acupuncturist Editor-in-Chief Adam Burke reaches a milestone as his work was recently listed as one of the top 20 “most cited” articles in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. The Qi-Unity Report has also interviewed Doug Wilson, MD, to show our readers how a progressive rural doctor envisions the prospects of integrative medicine. To examine other integration “front lines,” we turn to Joe Chang, who reports on the acupuncture inroads practitioners have been steadily making in the military. We also share studies sent in by AAAOM member Peter Sadkhin; these links suggesting AOM benefits for prostatitis.
