"All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident."
- Arthur Schopenhauer

Greetings AOM Members and Colleagues:

I include the Schopenhauer quote above to remind you that the truth of the AOM is similarly subject to the ever-changing nature of public perception. Acceptance of AOM is emerging - a fact influenced by your vital efforts to communicate with your Congressional representatives and to stress the importance of HR 646. Of course we still labor under the shadow of the much larger and shifting healthcare model; one which all too often excludes access to the practices you know work and put to use every day. Your patients seek your services because they work. Keep your heads up and remember that a mixture of urgency and persistence will serve to grow the field—one treatment at a time.

In this issue of the Qi-Unity Report, we offer you an assortment of articles that affect your life and work in the AOM field. The QUR interviews Mitch Stargrove, inventor of the IBIS database and OCOM professor. Mitch explains how the interactive database he designed originated, and how his open-ended model may allow practitioners the means to fine-tune various treatment options for any given patient - even as the database itself grows through practitioner observations. Laurel Axen Carroll discusses how Claudia Citkovitz and others reduce cesarean rates using AOM at Lutheran Hospital in New York City. Bryan Isacks discusses how to present AOM to allied health providers and examines the challenges and dynamics informing the frontiers of integrated medicine. Elisa Behnk reports on the increase in AAAOM-SO chapters and how two chapter schools have raised funds while simultaneously spreading AOM awareness. We also report on a new Minnesota law, effective August 1, which provides equal access to a licensed acupuncture practitioner for services covered under a regulated health plan. Lastly, for those of you that might have missed the President's Corner HR 646 90-Day Legislative Review Update Report, we have provided a copy under National AOM Issues. Our legislative activity has been intense, our achievements many, and our forward movement on our AOM in US Healthcare reform campaign self-evident.

Susan Johnson contributes a memorial reviewing the rare dedication of Miriam Lee’s life-work. Susan celebrates Miriam’s life and articulates her fundamental impact on AOM law in California and throughout the US.

On a personal note, I want to thank the AAAOM membership for the privilege of serving as program manager and managing editor of the Qi-Unity Report. It has been a pleasure to serve you, even as I now move on to other opportunities with alacrity. I place my AAAOM duties into the capable hands of Jolene Habeck and Lynn Eder. You may reach Lynn at leder@surewest.net and Jolene at jhabeck@aaaomonline.org.

The AAAOM is interested in your feedback. We invite you to use our General Feedback page to let us know your opinions and insights.
