Greetings AOM Members and Colleagues:

Seasonal changes always bring to the forefront the cycle of life - endings and new beginnings, whatever the season we’re approaching; each invigorates to spur our growth. Over the past six weeks, as I have worked for the AAAOM, we as an organization not only see the transition of seasonal climates, but also we see a change in an upcoming season of health care. The change occurring is not one reflective of autumn, but rather a new threshold of opportunity and progression. Spearheading and leading this progress, the AAAOM and its membership are working together to take advantage of the many opportunities that arise daily from our healthcare reform efforts. The AAAOM has many working parts within its Board of Directors - from the National Government Affairs Committee, which works on political legislation and issues nationwide, to the Fundraising Committee responsible for all aspects of resource development, to bylaws that address shifts in governance, or the AAAOM-SO that promotes and sculpts the future professionals of AOM. Collaboratively, the AAAOM Board of Directors is a dedicated council of practitioners that truly work on behalf of its constituency…you. These moving parts, together with the voice of the membership, are the means by which the profession of AOM will supersede even our own expectations in terms of politics, patient numbers, and health care reform.

What can you do to take a more active part?

Evaluation in Acupuncture: Past and Future
Want to know from an economic stand point where acupuncture has been and what the future looks like? Take a look at this latest article that was published in The American Acupuncturist, "Economic Evaluation in Acupuncture: Past and Future".

Results of First Professional Doctorate Survey
In order to assess the level of support by the AOM practitioner community towards the First Professional Doctorate (FPD), the AAAOM Education & Credentialing Committee conducted a survey of the AOM profession. A total of 904 responses, including 662 AOM practitioners, 208 students, and 34 AOM college administrators, were received.

The following is a brief summary of their responses:

  • For the FPD in acupuncture, of those who expressed an opinion 65% were supportive and 35% were not supportive.
  • Of these, AOM practitioners were 57% supportive and 43% not supportive; AOM students were 83% supportive and 17% not supportive, and AOM college administrators were 86% supportive and 14% non-supportive.
  • For the FPD in Oriental medicine, of those who expressed an opinion 70% were supportive and 30% were not supportive. Of these, AOM practitioners were 64% supportive and 36% not supportive;
  • AOM students were 86% supportive and 14% not supportive, and AOM college administrators were 94% supportive and 6% not supportive.

Real Life Acupuncture in the Media:
A few weeks ago, WUSA 9 news at 11 pm ran a story about women using acupuncture rather than surgery for improving their appearance. A similar apparently ran on MSNBC as well.
www.msnbc.msn.com. Acupuncture has made it in the news this past month, with stories of the inclusion of acupuncture at health fairs and festivals, such as Acufest at the Biltmore of Miami. Acupuncture used by athletes, Nathan Cayless and Kenny Miller.
